4.         A team shall consist of a maximum of 4 people.

5.         The host branch may invite one guest branch to participate in the quiz.

This branch may hold the trophy, if won, and would be responsible for setting the

questions for the following year’s quiz.

6.         A “Scratch Team” may be assembled from members of the audience. If this team should be winners a nominated member of the team shall hold the trophy, but the setting of the following years question would fall to the branch that is runner up in the competition.

7.         Depending on the number of quiz teams entered there will be a maximum of three heats with three teams taking part in each heat. The winner of each heat will go on to compete in the final. With fewer teams taking part, there will be two heats with the winners of each heat and the highest scoring runner up going through to the final.

8.            In the event of one or more teams being equal at the end of any heat or the final, there will be a play off between those teams with a sudden death tiebreaker.

9.         In general each set of 5 questions will contain two or three on merchant shipping,

at least one on naval matters and at least one on general maritime knowledge.

10.       Each team will be asked 5 questions in turn during two rounds in each heat. The team  being asked the question shall receive 2 points for a correct answer. The other teams in the heat shall receive 1 point for a correctly answered question.

The adjudicators will decide on any protests and their decision is final in all cases.

11.       Teams shall have up to 30 seconds in which to hand in their written answers to the steward. A bell will be rung after twenty seconds or, when the team being asked the question hands in their answer, whichever is the sooner. All teams must hand their answers to their steward within the next 10 seconds when a “time up” bell will be rung.  Answers are declared by the stewards and marked before going on to the next question.

12.       The winning team will be the one that gains the most points in the Final and they shall be presented with the Leslie Sargeant Memorial Trophy
